The senate has again raised the issue of police structure in Nigeria, following the killing of 16 officers in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta, noting that the current police force does not have the capacity to handle national security.

The lawmakers while deliberating on the incident, called for the recruitment of more policemen so that the military will not be dragged into civil matters, arguing that it was time of Nigeria to adequately equip the police to handle civil matters.

The Senate also called on the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA to send relief materials to the affected community while families of the killed soldiers should be compensated immediately.

Meanwhile, the lawmakers have commenced a probe into the incident, instructing the Committee on Defence, Army, Navy and Air force to liaise with the Military authorities to get more information on the remote and immediate cause of what it described as dastardly act.

Earlier, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio argued that the assailants involved in Thursday’s murder may be mercenaries, wondering how peace loving residents of the area would wield such weapons, without prior conflict or crisis.
