The federal government says it will shut down the third mainland bridge for six months to carry out a thorough repair on exposed portions of the bridge.

In a statement by the federal controller of works in Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, the ongoing repairs on the ramps will last for five weeks while work is expected to commence immediately for two weeks on the closed sections, and another three weeks for the other two ramps – outward Adekunle to Oworonshoki and outward Adekunle to Lagos Island.

According to Kesha closing of the Third Mainland Bridge for the extended period will afford the construction company ample time to re-examine the failed portions to sustain the bridge for another extended period.

Works Minister David Umahi in his recent tour of federal infrastructure in Lagos said the entire stretch of the bridge would undergo total resurfacing with minimal discomfort to road users.

Recall, the bridges underwent a round of repairs from in 2020, for the replacement of bearings and worn-out expansion joints but the ministry said the next maintenance exercise will be more comprehensive.
