The British Supreme Court has rejected a government plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, labelling it as unlawful.

The UK’s highest court issued its unanimous judgement today, ruling that the scheme would put asylum seekers at risk of ill-treatment because they could be sent back to their home countries once they land in Rwanda.

The decision deals a major blow to Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak’s planned hardline immigration policy, as he had promised to clamp down on illegal migration across the English Channel ahead of elections, next year.

Reacting, Sunak admitted that the outcome of the judgement is not what they wanted, adding that they have spent the last few months planning for all eventualities and remained completely committed to stopping illegal migration.
