Liverpool and Bayern Munich have been served heart breaking news after Xabi Alonso confirmed his intention to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s game, Alonso expressed profound gratitude to Liverpool and Bayern for their interest in his services but said he was hoping to end the season with the trophy and learn more on the job.

The two European big wigs will now have to turn their attention to other candidates, with Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel having confirmed their intentions to leave their managerial roles at the end of the current campaign.

Alonso, who played for both Liverpool and Bayern over the course of his career, has presided over a record breaking 33-game unbeaten run, leading Bayer Leverkusen to the brink of a rare Bundesliga title and the latter stages of the Europa League.
