The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) denied reports that it attacked a UN observer and a translator outside of Rmeish in southern Lebanon.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry in a statement argued that contrary to the reports, the IDF did not strike a UNIFIL vehicle in the area of Rmeish responding to allegations by United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, which described the attack as unacceptable.

UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti said the victims were observers that are part of the UN Truce Supervision Organization that supports UNIFIL to monitor hostilities along the demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel, known as the Blue Line.

The UN’s Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, said she was “saddened” to learn of the injuries and that the incident served as another reminder of the urgent need to return to a cessation of hostilities across the Blue Line.
