The parent company of Facebook, Meta has announced it would remove the Facebook news tab, a dedicated section to the news for social media users, in Australia and the U.S.
The company said the decision followed an 80 percent drop in the number of users of the section, admitting that people no longer visit Facebook for news and political content.
But the Australian government rejected the decision, noting that it would remove a significant source of revenue for Australian news media businesses.
Meta already eliminated the news section last year in Germany, France and the U.K.
