US lawmakers on Tuesday voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker.

Eight Republicans aligned with all 208 Democrats in voting for a motion to vacate, forcing McCarthy to relinquish his post.

It’s the first time in U.S. history that a speaker has been voted out.

Because there is no precedent for McCarthy’s removal it is not immediately clear what happens next.

House Republicans are holding a closed-door meeting and  It’s unclear what they’ll announce publicly afterward.
