Police in the U.S city of Lewiston in Maine have launched a manhunt for a suspect who opened fire on a bar and a bowling alley.

Maine State Police said officers were searching for a 40-year-old man from Bowdoin, considered armed and dangerous, warning members of the public against approaching him.

Police refused to say how many people were killed and injured, although media reports suggest the number ranges from 16 to 22 dead, with dozens more injured.

Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck, said hundreds of police officers are working around the state of Maine to investigate the case, refusing to confirm the number of deaths, noting that the situation is a very fluid.

Lewiston police said the incident took place at Schemengees Bar and Grille and at Sparetime Recreation, with a white SUV which they believe the suspect used to drive to the town of Lisbon, found southeast of Lewiston.
