The organized labor has denied allegations that Nigeria labor congress President, Joe Ajaero was brutalized in Imo state for meddling in local politics, insisting that the labor was in the state to demand the wages and improved welfare of members.

In a televised interview today, Head, international relations, NLC, Uchenna Ekwe argued that the narrative of politics mixed with workers agitation was unfounded and misleading, stating that there were substantial cases of workers maltreatment and intimidation by the state government.

The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, also reechoed the stance maintaining that the government of the state was hostile to labor unions and was not ready to dialogue, instead decided to employ unorthodox means in quenching the demands of the work force.

Ajaero was attacked in Owerri, the Imo State capital, last Wednesday just before a planned protest in the state to press the state government to heed the demands of the workers in the state.

The NLC and the TUC have since ordered shutdown of essential services in Imo as protest for the attack on Ajaero and declared a nationwide strike effective November 14, 2023.
