Defending 800-meter gold medalist Athing Mu falls in Olympic trials, will miss Paris

Reigning Olympic 800m champion Athing Mu will not defend her title in Paris 2024 after a dramatic fall at the US Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon. The 22-year-old tripped about 200m into the race, finishing last.

Nia Akins won the race, securing her spot in Paris alongside Allie Wilson and Juliette Whittaker. Mu’s absence removes a key rival for Team GB’s Keely Hodgkinson, who won silver behind the American in Tokyo.

In the men’s 400m, Quincy Hall overtook 2022 world champion Michael Norman to win in 44.14 seconds. Norman, who finished second, admitted to a poorly executed race due to excitement. Chris Bailey claimed the third spot for Paris.

Notably, 16-year-old Quincy Wilson finished sixth, putting him in contention for the relay pool. The trials have reshaped expectations for the upcoming Olympics.
