The Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area, Muibi Alade Folawiyo, has emphasised the importance of grassroots administrations prioritising food security for their constituents.

Speaking at the 17th discounted food market on Broad Street, where over 2,000 residents purchased staple foods at 70-90% discounted rates, Folawiyo stated, “It is our duty to prioritize the basic needs of our people, especially food, in these challenging economic times.”

The market offered items such as one crate of egg for N1000, live chicken – N2000, pack of Indomie Noodles – N1500, one bottle of groundnut oil – N1000, 4Kg rice – N2,400 among other essential food items at significantly reduced prices.

Folawiyo urged residents to support government initiatives, saying, “We call on our citizens to fulfill their civic responsibilities, including tax payments, to enable us to continue providing these essential services, because it is their money we are using to execute these programmes.”

While reeling out other achievements of his administration including the construction of community roads, 114 roads and distribution of laptops to basic schools in the council, Folawiyo urged Nigerians to continue to have hope in the administrations of President Bola Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Council Administrators in Lagos State.

Participants expressed gratitude for the council’s approach. One resident remarked, “This market is a lifesaver, especially now when food prices are at an all-time high.”

Assuring the continuation of the program, Folawiyo concluded, “We are committed to sustaining this discounted market project in the coming months to support our community.”
