Former commissioner of Police, Sunday Ehindero says the consideration for state police is not a testament that the current police structure has failed but an evidence of crippled police force not allowed to operate as stipulated by law.

The former police chief speaking during an interview, noted that the police has not be adequately equipped and given free hand to operate, sighting interference from sister agencies and political figures.

Ehindero expressed fear in the success of state police under the current political setting, explaining that history has revealed that governors and local government officials may abuse such powers which will be detrimental to democracy.

He however suggested that further consultations be held on the subject to ensure that the full scope and implication of the proposed security structure is clear and open to all stakeholders, to avoid putting the country at a tight corner.
