Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stopped by Beijing’s Temple of Heaven this morning as he followed in the footsteps of the first Australian leader to visit China, retracing a walk made five decades ago as ties were being established.

Albanese who is the first, the first Australian leader to visit China since 2016, hopes to mend relations between the trading partners after tensions in recent years China blocked Australian products including wine, barley and beef at the height of Covid-19.

Earlier, foreign minister, Penny wong and shadow foreign minister, had restated commitments to smoothen the relationship with China, noting that the South China Sea is an important passageway for its trade with Japan and South Korea.

Albanese, who arrived on Saturday, was due to meet President Xi Jinping later today, in their second face-to-face talks in a year.
