Retired Chief Justice of Nigeria Olukayode Ariwoola has complained of too many cases before the apex court which ought to have terminated at the appellate court.

At a valedictory session in his honour at the Supreme Court in Abuja on Thursday, Ariwoola said the backlog of cases at the court forced litigants and lawyers to wait for several years to have their cases decided.

Noting that lawyers and litigants do not have to wait for so long to have their cases heard, the retired Justice stressed the need for more judicial officers to rule on all matters timely.

Ariwoola was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2011 and became Acting CJN in June 2022. He bowed out of service on Thursday having clocked 70 years old.

Meanwhile, the National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun to President Bola Tinubu for appointment as CJN.
