Rescuers in India were today using excavators in an attempt to reach road workers trapped inside a collapsed tunnel in the northern state of Uttarakhand.

National Disaster Response Force, said in a statement that all the 40 workers trapped inside the tunnel are safe, and the force has sent them food and water.

The workers have been trapped inside the tunnel for over 24 hours, after parts of the 4.5-kilometer tunnel between Silkyara and Dandalgaon collapsed yesterday.

Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, flew to the site of the accident today, stating that the work to remove the tons of tumbled concrete debris were being made continuously to ensure safety of the trapped workers.

The tunnel is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Char Dham Road Project, which aims to connect some of the most popular Hindu shrines in the country, as well as areas bordering China.
